Inspiration came in the form of Abstract painter Sonya Delaunay, Ernst Kirchner, as well as looking at Charleston and Monk's House - the famed home and meeting place of the Bloomsbury Artists.
I hoped to demonstrate how we create a strong sense of Mari ' The Artist'. The interiors I referenced were way earlier than the period we are looking at, but I think they serves as a good reference in terms of a creative space or the home of an artist. The Bloomsbury group embraced colour, pattern, print and also textiles. I think that given the age of the location, its not a bad thing to be looking to some older references like this, whilst still making sure it doesn’t look overly period, or TOO ARTY!
We attempted to resolve how we marry the very bright modern feeling paintings with a character in her eighties! Sonya Delaunay is great inspiration for this.
The idea for Mari's house was basically to avoid granny-cliches and pale pastels - and to embrace colour in the same way that the character does in her artwork.
Kitchen
I thought about TERACOTTA walls, that would work in harmony with the vast amounts of cream which exist in the kitchen, but are still very much in our 'Mari' palette. All sets will feature vibrant accent colours such as pink and turqouise - in a similar way to the paintings
Lounge
Initial thoughts were to go with an Ochre which is bold and yet a colour that can often be found on the walls of many period home. As a secondary option however, we have developed a vibrant/jade green option, which perhaps feels more enegrgising, and would be better suited for the dance scene.
Bedroom
This will be a bold pink - not a wishy-washy pastel!
The idea for Mari's house is basically to avoid granny-cliches and pale pastels - and to embrace colour in the same way that the character does in her artwork.
DETAIL
In terms of detail in the house we aimed to create a sense of 'The Artist' - ie pots of brushes, paint in evidence, lots of art work on the walls, interesting textiles etc.
In addition, we captured the sense of 'thriftyness' that that generation had - 'life hacks' that we simply cannot comprehend today - saving crosswords, recycling or finding a new purpose for EVERYTHING, the yoghurt cups catching water drips - its that whole wartime mentality, which will disappear forever with that generation. I think this is something we tried to reflect in the set - in the sense that Mari has spent many years in this house, and had kept, collected, and recycled all sorts of things. As mentioned previously I wanted the house to feel eclectic, without getting too bohemian. I think it is imperative that there is that 'layer' of ephemera to really give it a lived in feel. I also think plants were helpful.

Having grown to understand Newcastle in a short space of time, I was inspired by the age and scale of the buildings. This became a daily find for the best locations that worked for the film. We often used old film photographs to seek the look of a location.
My exploration and understanding with colour and specifically chroma colour continued in this project as we were working monochromaticly with black and white. Black being the most essential colour of them all. Working with materials, shadows and natural highlights, Gerard and I were sharing all our images through a black and white lens. In black and white I found it can be easier to control tone and the precision of detail. The focus was on what drama it would add to the everyday environments which was prevalent here. For me, I was also interested in how a certain material might present a gloss and/or absorb the light.

A psychological thriller that’s dripping in sweat, tears, and testosterone: the story of Simon, an unhappy, unambitious office worker whose life is gradually taken over by Terry, his new, very hands-on personal trainer who reveals himself to be more committed - and more dangerous - than Simon could have imagined.

The challenges of making a made up Peter Strickland world was one everyone involved wanted to make.
Within a tight schedule and budget I was interested in getting the best out of a few locations. The dress was the main character and all other objects became moments around the dress. Having a haunted red dress as a central point was the basis for building the shop floor and then the interiors.
We developed the interiors after we became interested in the surreal and absurd. We first decided to use Croydon as the vortex for the film.

Working with dance, martial arts and sign language collaborators, and with a specially composed score Trinity represents Hetain Patel’s most significant and developed film work so far.
Working with Hetains personal story and aspirations to be make superhero films, this was a true collaboration in making this both authentic and magical.

Vest was a project that was both heavy and lighthearted. The mute boy is contrasted with the stimulation of the family and his surroundings. Samir and I wanted to create the tension, doing so through a real and vibrant world. With the core of this being rooted in family, the house is their home and escape at the same time. We wanted to reflect that in humour and intrigue across the look, framing and textures within the film.

There She Goes was written by Shaun Pye and is about a severely learning disabled 9-year-old girl Rosie (Miley Locke), her dad Simon (David Tennant), mum Emily (Jessica Hynes) and brother Ben (Edan Hayhurst). All the stories and characters are drawn from the real life experience of writer Shaun Pye, whose daughter was born in 2006 with an extremely rare and, to date, undiagnosed chromosomal disorder.
Each episode shines a light on day-to-day life with Rosie – unique experiences from simply trying to take her to the park to trying to explain that everyday isn’t her birthday. A second timeline in 2006 shows the effect having a severely disabled child had on the family unit, how it threatened to disintegrate but ultimately brought them even closer.

Early on in the process, we started to explore a colour scheme. The result was to keep the colours represented, to what existed. We were developing our ideas from the feelings of being repressed and controlled and the scheme reflected this.
I was interested in making the subject matter flow through the religious details and symbols.

When working out the palette for Endo, we talked about using bold and block colours. I wanted to be subtle and to keep the rhythm light as the subject is hard enough. Injecting a colour with hints was important part of the process.
